Oxfam, partners implement recovery programs

Oxfam Malawi in partnership with European Union Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid and Plan International has implemented recovery programs for people affected by Cyclone Ana in the districts of Chikwawa, Nsanje and Phalombe.

During the program, the victims will be getting K40 000 and non-food items comprising buckets and soap.

Speaking to the media after presenting relief items in Phalombe, Oxfam Malawi disaster risk reduction and resilience program officer Tapiwa Juma, said the one-month emergency recovery response will help families hit by the disaster to be able to meet basic lifesaving needs.

“Currently, we are mobilizing resources from our donors to help the victims to recover and build their resilience.

“Our assessment has informed us that people are in need of food and other non-food items, sanitary facilities and dignity kits for girls who are going to school from camps,” she said.

One of the victims, Brazio Cossam , thanked Oxfam for support which come at the time it was needed most.

“Our homes and property have been lost due to the heavy rains and this timely relief will assist us to buy some basic needs. We urge other organisations to emulate this gesture because we still have some people in need of the support,” he said.
